What gets handled for you
- Transparency. JPG has no alpha channel — transparent regions in PNG, WebP, AVIF or PSD are composited onto a plain white background. This matches what most word processors and CMSes expect.
- Multi-frame inputs. Animated GIF/WebP/AVIF and multi-page TIFF/PSD only emit the first frame or page, since JPG is single-frame.
- EXIF orientation. Phone-camera photos and HEIC files arrive upright — the orientation tag is read, the pixels are rotated to match, and the now-redundant tag is dropped.
- CMYK source. Photoshop-exported CMYK images are converted to sRGB before JPG encoding, so the output looks correct in browsers and standard viewers.
- Metadata stripping. EXIF, IPTC and ICC profile data is removed for a leaner output. The visible pixel content is preserved exactly; only the invisible metadata is dropped.
Picking the right quality
- 100 — maximum quality. Largest file size; visually indistinguishable from the source. Use for archival masters.
- 95 — visually lossless for almost every viewer. A safe pick when you want top quality without the absolute-maximum file size.
- 90 (default) — the sweet spot for web and document use. Detail is preserved on photos and screenshots; file size stays reasonable.
- 85 — slightly smaller files than the default, with detail loss most viewers won't notice.
- 70–80 — good for casual sharing. JPEG artefacts start to show on hard edges (text, logos) but photos still look clean.
- 40–60 — smallest files. Use only when bandwidth is critical and the image is going to be viewed at small sizes.
